The Death of the Episcopal Church is Near

Last November, I wrote a post for Religion in Public with the title, “The Data is Clear – Episcopalians are in Trouble.” In it, I used survey data to paint a portrait of a denomination that was on the brink of collapse. One of the most troubling things about the future of the Episcopal Church is that the average member is incredibly old. The modal age of an Episcopalian in 2019 was sixty-nine years old. With life expectancy around 80, we can easily expect at least a third of the current membership of the denomination to be gone in the next fifteen or twenty years. That’s problematic when membership has already been plummeting for decades

But, I came across some data in the last few weeks that I just had to look at in more depth. Before I get into the graphs, I have to give some serious kudos to the data team that works for the denomination. I have looked at the websites of all kinds of Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian and Catholic traditions over the last few years. The Episcopalians blow them all out of the water in terms of accessibility and ease of use. Don’t believe me? Well, they have an interactive dashboard of all their churches in the United States. You can sort based on a map, church size, or amount of offering. It’s incredible and can be accessed at this link (update: this link no longer allows access to the dashboard). 

Let’s get down to it, though. How many people actually attend an Episcopal church on an average Sunday? I grabbed a PDF of their membership reports from here and did some quick analysis of the national trends. 

In 2009, 725,000 people attended an Episcopal church on an average weekend. According to their own data, the Episcopal Church has about 1.8 million baptized members. Thus, about 40% of members actually attend on a regular basis. That’s been declining steadily over the last decade. A typical year sees attendance dip by 25,000-35,000 people. That represents a 2-3% year-over-year decline. By 2019, the weekly attendance was 547,000. In percentage terms, the Episcopalians have seen their attendance drop by a quarter in just the last decade. 

But, that doesn’t tell the whole story about the future of the Episcopalians. Churches need money to operate and on this measure there’s plenty of reasons to be optimistic. The Episcopalians calculate what they call “plate and pledge,” which is an accounting of not just money dropped in the offering plate, but also the amount that members have pledged to donate in the future. We can reasonably assume that not all pledged donations will eventually be collected, but it’s still a decent metric to gauge financial health. 

There’s little reason to expect that the money is going to run out for the Episcopalians anytime soon. In fact, the total amount of plate and pledge has actually risen between 2014 and 2019. In 2014, the denomination received about 1.3 billion dollars from their members. By 2019 that had increased by about fifty million dollars. That’s surprising given that the overall attendance in the tradition has declined during that same time period. 

Using both the weekly attendance figures and the “plate and pledge” numbers, I calculated how much the average attender gave in their annual offerings between 2014 and 2019  – these numbers are truly stunning. In 2014, the average Episcopalian gave $2057. By 2019, that figure had increased nearly four hundred dollars per year to $2469. That represents a 20% increase in donations in just six years, while inflation has only increased by 13.7%.

Now, there are two possible explanations that I can think of to explain this trend. The first is that those that remain in the Episcopal Church are incredibly committed to the cause. They are the ones who freely give each Sunday. Thus, the ones who gave little are no longer Episcopalians, while the big givers are still faithful. The other is that many Episcopalians have died in the last few years and they have given a portion of their estate to the church. This would obviously drive up the overall “plate and pledge” donations and possibly inflate these numbers. It may be the case that the average offering in the plate is actually smaller, but that is supplemented by these larger donations from the wills of those who have died in recent years. 

Despite the fact that the coffers of the Episcopal Church are staying full through sustained donations from members, there is plenty of reason to be very concerned about the future of the denomination. In an article for Living Church, David Goodhew presented some numbers about weddings and baptisms occurring in the Episcopal Church that will be disheartening for members.

In 1980, the Episcopal Church reported 38,913 weddings. By 1990, that had dropped to 31,815. In 2019, that had declined again to just 6,148. Baptisms of children are only doing marginally better. In 1980, there were over 56,000 but by 2000 that dropped to 46,603. By 2019, that had declined by more than half to just 17,713. Using that data I project what both figures would look like in 2030, which is visualized in the figure below. According to the trend lines there will be no weddings in the Episcopal church in 2025. By 2030, the number of baptisms will drop to below 10,000 per year. 

The implications for the Episcopalians are dire. Recall that the average Episcopalian is in their late sixties today, which means that the average attendance (which was about 550,000 in 2019) will likely be around 300,000 in 2030. That’s an average loss of 25,000 per year just through death. The church will be baptizing less than 10,000 infants per year. We know that retention for the mainline is just about 50% now, which means half those children who are baptized will eventually leave the church. When 25,000 people are leaving through death and only 5,000 are being replaced through children who stick around  – the end is near. I don’t think that it’s an exaggeration at all to believe that the Episcopalians will no longer exist by 2040. 

But, that leaves a bigger question  – can a denomination continue when it has money but no people? That’s the future that may be facing the Episcopal Church. According to their finance office, the denomination has $400 million in trust, $11 billion in a pension plan for retired clergy, and another $4.5 billion in assets held at the parish and diocese level. To put it bluntly, money is not the issue. This means that denominational leaders are not going to be forced to disband when the accounts hit zero, but will instead have to make decisions based on other, more amorphous factors. Speaking as a pastor of a church that is likely to close in the future – it’s a lot easier to make the decision to close the doors when the money runs out instead of when people would rather go worship with a larger community in another church. But, barring a tremendous revival, the end is coming very quickly for our friends in the Episcopal tradition.

  1. Your analysis contains a number of flaws. You combined the average Sunday attendance of from 2009 with the baptized membership of 2019. The ASA of 725,000 in 2009 represented 33.3% of its baptized membership of 2.176 million. The ASA of 547,000 in 2019 represented 30.4% of its baptized membership of 1.798 million. By itself the ASA is a poor measure of the number of how many individuals attend church on a regular basis and are active members. The norm of weekly attendance has been supplanted by the increasing number of “regular” attendees whose worship regularity trends toward biweekly or once a month. Often the yearly contribution remains the same, even when a person worships less frequently (thanks to online giving and bank bill payment programs). While still a dramatic decline, I believe the 17.4% drop in membership may be a better measure of the church’s decline than the 25% decline in ASA.

    The category of “plate and pledge” was also mischaracterized. It refers to money which was actually donated during each year. The distinction is between pledged money that was promised for the year and paid during the year versus plate money which was donated primarily by those who did not pledge. Bequests are seldom, if ever, included in the figures for plate and pledge donations. However, when the plate and pledge figures for 2014 and 2019 are correlated with the baptized membership for those years (instead of the ASA), there is a 12.6% growth in per capita giving ($667 to $751) which is fairly close to the inflation rate. That growth was sufficient to to provide a 3.5% increase in total plate and pledge income and to offset the 8% drop in membership during that period.

    The trend line for baptisms is likewise not a sentence of death. Family sizes have been falling steadily since the baby boom years. It is true that fewer Episcopalians are being hatched to replace those who die. However, the large number of unchurched Americans is a fertile field for parishes who are willing to share the Good News. Among the signs of hope are the facts that 32% of congregations reported an increase in ASA from 2018 to 2019 and 15% of congregations reported growth of 10+% over the five years from 2014 to 2019. Decline is not inevitable.

  2. I forgot to point out that the TEC parish I belonged to has now closed for good. Their average Sunday attendance was in the area of ten or less, so it was inevitable… sad, though. Even though I left, I have good memories of that congregation.

  3. I am over 60 yrs old and one of the youngest people in my TEC congregation of about 100. Yet, we get new members all the time from various denominational backgrounds. They’re just all over 65. Two couples (one Methodist and the other Not Really Anything in the Past) have joined in the past month. Are we the church of choice for retirees? An interesting future.

  5. The statistics about annual giving to the ECUSA should be interpreted with this fact in mind: most giving in a parish is done by a few pledge-giving units. The data from the last decade make it clear that a few people in a typical congregation support the direction that the local rector is taking.

    Also, some congregations (about 15% in a typical diocese) are flourishing. That means that most congregations are dying off much more quickly than your analysis might indicate.

    The fruitful area of inquiry is: Why are some congregations in the ECUSA flourishing? Few bishops want a truthful answer to that question, because it would highlight all too painfully that rectors with traditional Christian values and good interpersonal skills are very rare in the modern ECUSA.

As a non-Episcopalian with little knowledge of the Episcopal Church, I read this article out of curiosity.  While there seem to be some minor differences in how the relevant statistics are interpreted, the statistic that stands out as the most concerning is the advanced age of the membership. That statistic alone would seem to indicate that the existence of the Church is at risk unless some radical changes are made for the purpose of attracting younger people.
